Indefinite Strike by Truckers in Karnataka Starting April 15
Bengaluru: The Federation of Karnataka State Lorry Owners and Agents Association has declared an indefinite strike set to begin on April 15. The protest is in response to the state government’s recent increase in diesel prices, ongoing toll fees on state highways, and the presence of checkposts.
This decision comes after a meeting of the federation held on Saturday. GR Shanmugappa, the association’s president, highlighted that the sales tax on diesel has risen by Rs 5 over the past ten months, creating significant financial strain for truck operators.
Shanmugappa warned that the continued rise in diesel prices could negatively impact the state’s revenue. He noted that truck owners from other states might opt to refuel outside Karnataka to dodge the elevated costs, thereby leading to a decline in fuel sales within the state.
In addition to the diesel price hike, the federation is opposing toll fees collected at 18 different points on state highways. According to Shanmugappa, no other state imposes tolls for state highway usage, and in Karnataka, these fees are charged even where there has been minimal progress on infrastructure improvements.
He raised a pertinent question regarding the rationale behind levying toll fees while truck owners are already burdened by motor vehicle taxes and increasing diesel prices.
Furthermore, the federation expressed concerns over the continued operation of border checkposts in the state. They argue that with a significant move towards digital transactions in logistics, the need for such checkposts has diminished.
The planned strike underscores the frustrations of truck operators in Karnataka, as they seek relief from the rising costs and burdensome regulations affecting their livelihoods.
