Workforce Decline in Truck Transportation

In 2025, the number of individuals employed in truck transportation was significantly lower than previously reported. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released its monthly employment report in February, which includes the annual revision that reflects updated employment data accumulated over time, beyond the typical monthly updates.

Impact of Annual Revisions

The annual revision is much more comprehensive than the short-term adjustments, which only allow for revisions of the previous two months. For instance, September’s report provides initial data for August, along with potentially adjusted figures for July and June. Once that report is published, June data remains static until the next annual revision, and July can only be adjusted one more time before the annual review.

Discrepancies in Employment Estimates

The first report to apply the annual revision indicates that the BLS’s monthly estimates for truck transportation jobs in 2025 were inflated. The annual revision corrected these figures, showing a widening gap between the initially reported and revised numbers throughout the year.

Yearly Employment Changes

For instance, in January 2025, the “final” number of truck transportation jobs was reported as 1,532,000, but the revision adjusted this to 1,493,100, revealing a discrepancy of 26,000 jobs. By December 2025, the annual revision showed 1,466,900 truck transportation jobs, which was 46,400 fewer than previously reported for that month.

Market Volatility and Job Losses

David Spencer, director of business intelligence at Arrive Logistics, suggested that the extent of these revisions was anticipated due to ongoing market fluctuations. In December, there was a significant drop in employment numbers, coinciding with increases in linehaul costs per mile, underscoring recent volatility in the market.

Long-Term Trends and Warehouse Employment

Notably, the downward trend in truck transportation jobs has been evident over recent years, with the peak number recorded in January 2023 at 1,587,800 jobs. The revised figure for December 2025 reflects a deeper decline. Conversely, the warehouse sector showed an upward trend, with revised December 2025 employment figures at 1,833,100, marking an increase from earlier estimates.

Overall Sector Trends

The broader Transportation and Warehouse sector is anticipated to have fewer jobs than previously estimated. Although the preliminary estimate suggested a rise in jobs, the revised figures indicate a decline of 104,000 jobs from December 2024 to 2025.
