Worst Instance of Rolling Coal Captured on Video

A Reddit user posted a shocking video showcasing one of the most egregious examples of rolling coal. In the footage, an individual opens the door of a Whataburger, allowing a thick plume of diesel smoke to envelop the interior.

Patrons’ Reaction

Laughter and disbelief erupted among diners, who quickly fled the area to escape the noxious fumes.

Legal Background of Rolling Coal

Rolling coal is against the law since it utilizes aftermarket devices that circumvent vehicle emissions controls. The federal Clean Air Act regulates this behavior, and the Department of Justice has even pursued eBay for selling such products, which could incur $2 billion in penalties.

Infamous Case Linked to Rolling Coal

The most notorious instance of rolling coal occurred near Houston, where a teenager allegedly struck six cyclists while performing this reckless act. He was subsequently charged with six counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Definition of Assault in Context

The Waller County District Attorney’s office stated, “Rolling coal in proximity to individuals who then are intentionally exposed to excess exhaust is at least an assault.” The statement continued, emphasizing that targeting a person with diesel fumes violates their dignity and can lead to serious penalties if harm results.

Health Risks of Rolling Coal

Rolling coal poses severe health risks, as diesel exhaust is known to be carcinogenic. It also contributes to ozone formation, acid rain, and damage to vegetation, thereby entering the food chain through water and various food products, as noted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Community Response and Accountability

Witnesses to such incidents are urged to report the offending individual or vehicle to authorities. Commenters expressed their outrage online, with one questioning the complicity of the person who held the door open, while another suggested that rolling coal be classified as a felony, likening it to a premeditated chemical attack.
