Tragic Crash on Eastern Freeway Claims Lives of Four Officers

The driver of a refrigerated chicken truck, Mohinder Singh Bajwa, has yet to be interviewed by law enforcement following a serious accident that resulted in the deaths of four police officers. Bajwa is currently recuperating from a ‘medical episode’ that he experienced after the incident.

Hailing from Cranbourne in Melbourne’s southeast, Bajwa remains under police supervision in a hospital two days after he drove his truck into the emergency lane of the freeway near Kew, reaching approximately 100 km/h. His truck collided with two stationary police vehicles, instantly killing leading Senior Constable Lynette Taylor, Constable Glen Humphris, Senior Constable Kevin King, and Constable Josh Prestney.

Reports indicate that Bajwa lost consciousness after the crash and has been unable to communicate with authorities. Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Shane Patton stated that Bajwa is currently not fit for an interview, adding, “We don’t know whether that will be today or in the next couple of days.” The relatives of the deceased officers are understandably devastated and are seeking answers.

On Wednesday evening, police executed a search warrant at Bajwa’s residence following the crash, although details of what was discovered have not been disclosed. The four officers were originally responding to a speeding Porsche 911, which was clocked at 140 km/h around 4:50 PM.

Approximately 50 minutes later, Bajwa’s semi-trailer veered off course and struck the parked police cars. Authorities have stated that it is still too early to ascertain the cause of the crash, emphasizing the need to speak with Bajwa first.

Victorian Police Commissioner Graham Ashton reported that Bajwa has no significant criminal history and a blood sample has been collected for testing. The truck traveled a short distance in the shoulder lane before colliding with the parked vehicles, resulting in a catastrophic accident.

The driver of the Porsche, identified as 41-year-old Richard Pusey, reportedly fled the scene after allegedly filming the aftermath of the crash. Arrested later at a pharmacy, he faces multiple charges, including dangerous driving and failing to provide assistance. His court appearance is scheduled for Friday.
