The Start of a New Journey
Troy Carroll transitioned to the trucking industry after a successful career in Moto-Cross and team management. Upon selling the team’s equipment, including the race transport semi-trailer, he unexpectedly decided to keep the prime mover, a black Freightliner Argosy. This decision might have been influenced by his father’s long-standing 40-year involvement in the trucking business.
First Steps into Trucking
“The prime mover was just sitting there, and a friend suggested I get a trailer to start delivering for him,” Troy recalls. He obtained his semi license the day before his first trip, which took him from Brisbane to a mining site at the Roma Logistics Hub in central Queensland.
Family Involvement
As the business grew, Vince, Troy’s father, joined the team as a subcontractor with his own truck, leveraging his extensive experience from founding and managing Carroll Truck Sales Toowoomba, among other roles in the industry. “I later bought his truck, and he worked for me for a while as we expanded our fleet,” Troy explains.
Rapid Expansion
As the operation scaled, Troy recognized the need for a trustworthy financial manager and invited his father to become the Financial Controller. “The business has continued to thrive, now with 23 pieces of equipment and three new trucks on order,” he adds, mentioning plans to acquire additional trailers like flat top and drop deck options.
Generational Commitment
Troy also shared that his 18-year-old daughter recently began working in the office, marking the involvement of three generations of the family in the business alongside 18 employees.
Diversification into Logistics
Last year, the company expanded into third-party logistics (3PL) services at a new facility in Yatala. This site enables the storage of goods after they are unloaded from shipping containers before being delivered to customers. “We initially use subcontractors for container delivery, but plan to purchase our own sideloaders for full control,” Troy states.
Future Aspirations
Looking ahead, Troy is eager to keep growing the business over the next 8 to 10 years, aiming to create a comprehensive end-to-end service for customers. “I put in the same effort here as I did in racing, ensuring our equipment is top-notch and our service impeccable,” Troy notes modestly, “I believe maintaining loyal relationships with companies that have supported us is crucial for success.”
