Innovative Change at Melton Truck Lines
Melton Truck Lines, an Oklahoma-based flatbed carrier, has exemplified that substantial financial investment is not a prerequisite for significant innovation. The company received CCJ’s 2023 Innovator of the Year award for its groundbreaking driver influencer initiative, which encourages drivers to share videos on platforms such as TikTok and YouTube.
Impact on Recruitment and Operations
This innovative program has yielded remarkable results, particularly in recruitment efforts targeting younger demographics. Following its initiation in April 2022, Melton observed a substantial rise in online driver referrals — a 56% increase in applications and a 45% rise in hires from referrals during a similar period compared to last year, according to Digital Marketing Manager Kennedy Alvarez. This spike has also allowed recruiters to focus on more strategic hiring practices, ultimately enhancing overall safety and productivity.
Growth of the Driver Influencer Program
As Melton’s driver roster has expanded, so too has the influencer program. Initially consisting of 12 influencers when the award was received in February, it has now grown to nearly 20 influencers.
Spotlight on Driver Influencer Terrance Small
Terrance Small, one of the influencers, shared his journey in the trucking industry and launched his YouTube channel, 50 Plus Trucker Journey, aimed at providing valuable resources for aspiring truckers. His videos, which focus on training and insight into the flatbed driving profession, add to a diverse array of content created by other influencers covering health, fitness, and lifestyle topics.
Cost-Effective and Genuine Content Creation
Alvarez emphasized the program’s cost-effectiveness, stating that it leverages organic content from drivers, which resonates more with audiences compared to traditional marketing campaigns. Since February, Melton’s TikTok following surged from 5,000 to over 11,000, accumulating more than five million views this year, demonstrating the program’s positive impact on engagement.
Tiering Incentives for Driver Influencers
In response to the program’s success, Melton adjusted its incentive structure to a tiered model based on engagement metrics rather than follower counts. Drivers can earn rewards at different levels—bronze, silver, and gold—based on the average views on their content, ensuring that higher engagement is recognized and rewarded, thereby promoting authentic connections with their audience.
Broader Industry Benefits
Beyond assisting Melton, the influencer program has positively affected the broader trucking industry by setting accurate expectations about the lifestyle associated with the job, which aids in both recruitment and retention. By providing insights directly from drivers, they prepare newcomers for the realities of trucking, making the transition smoother and fostering better long-term employment relationships.
