Tragic Accident on U.S. Route 460

On July 10, a tractor-trailer driver lost his life on U.S. Route 460 in Sussex County when debris from another vehicle struck his cab, causing him to veer off the highway and crash into trees, according to Virginia State Police.

Location and Incident Details

The incident occurred on Route 460, known as General Mahone Highway, just west of Waverly, as stated by State Police Sgt. Michelle Anaya in an email. The victim has been identified as 64-year-old Keith Michael Loback from Roanoke.

Sequence of Events

Preliminary investigations revealed that Loback was driving west on Route 460 and had just passed the intersection with Spring Branch Road when a metal-framed tarp detached from an eastbound commercial vehicle, striking the windshield on the driver’s side.

Impact and Consequences

The force of the impact knocked a mirror from its mount, hitting Loback and rendering him unconscious. His vehicle then crossed over to the eastbound side of the highway, crashing into several trees.

Victim’s Status

Unfortunately, Loback was pronounced dead at the accident site.

Appeal for Witnesses

State police are urging the public to help locate the vehicle that lost the tarp. They are asking anyone who may have witnessed the accident to contact them at (804) 750-8789 or via email at questions@vsp.virginia.gov.
