For independent owner-operators or those managing truck fleets, securing commercial truck insurance is essential. Our focus here is specifically on the requirements for tractor-trailer operators.

Types of Businesses Requiring Commercial Truck Insurance

Various business sectors that may need commercial truck insurance include:

  • Agricultural haulers
  • Auto haulers
  • Coal haulers
  • Dirt, sand, and gravel haulers
  • Garbage, debris, and trash haulers
  • General freight haulers
  • Machinery and heavy equipment haulers
  • Refrigerated goods haulers
  • Scrap metal and recycling services
  • Steel haulers

State Insurance Requirements

Each state has its own minimum insurance requirements for commercial trucks, which may vary based on the type of freight being transported. For example, in California, trucks over 10,000 pounds must carry at least:

  • $750,000 for general freight
  • $300,000 for household goods
  • $1 million for oil transportation
  • $5 million for hazardous materials

Common Risks in Commercial Trucking

Motor vehicle accidents represent one of the primary risks in commercial trucking. According to recent statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, large trucks, defined as those with a gross vehicle weight rating over 10,000 pounds, are involved in approximately 8% of all vehicle crashes in the U.S. Here are additional accident statistics:

  • About 6% of crashes that result in injuries involve large trucks.
  • Approximately 13% of all fatal vehicle crashes include large trucks.

Cargo Theft Trends

Cargo theft is another significant issue within the trucking industry. In 2024, there were 3,625 reported instances of cargo theft in the U.S. and Canada, marking a 27% increase from the previous year, as noted by Verisk CargoNet. Here are some key trends regarding cargo theft:

  • Food and beverage items, along with household goods, are the most frequently targeted commodities.
  • The leading locations for cargo theft incidents are warehouses/distribution centers and truck stops.
  • The states most affected by cargo theft include California, Texas, and Illinois.
