What is a commercial truck loan?

A commercial truck loan, commonly known as semitruck financing, is designed for borrowers looking to purchase a commercial truck.

This loan functions similarly to equipment financing, allowing borrowers to spread the truck’s cost over regular payments over time. Since the loan is asset-based, the truck serves as collateral in case of default.

Many institutions, including banks, direct lenders, and online lenders, offer commercial truck loans, and some are open to working with new businesses and those with less-than-ideal credit.

How does semitruck financing work?

Semi-truck financing operates much like a small business term loan, where borrowers receive a lump sum upfront to cover the cost of a truck. The loan typically features a fixed repayment period with monthly payments that include both interest and principal.

Similar to personal auto loans or business equipment loans, commercial truck financing uses the vehicle as collateral. If the borrower defaults, the lender has the right to reclaim the truck.

Commercial truck financing vs. leasing

Both semitruck financing and leasing are options to help manage the initial costs of a truck, but they have key differences. Financing allows for full ownership of the vehicle, while leasing means you are essentially paying for the right to use the truck for a specific time period.

Semitruck financing requirements

Requirements for securing semitruck financing vary by lender but generally follow certain criteria. Most lenders expect a down payment, which typically hovers around 20%, though it can be higher for individuals with poor credit.

A favorable credit score is usually a prerequisite, ideally in the high 600s, but some may accept scores as low as 500. Providing a personal guarantee may also improve your chances, but it comes with risks to your personal assets.

Types of commercial truck loans: Banks vs. direct lenders vs. online lenders

Borrowers can source commercial truck loans from various lenders, each with distinct characteristics:

  • Banks: Traditional lenders with more stringent eligibility requirements, often favoring established businesses with strong credit.
  • Online lenders: Typically offer faster approvals with relaxed criteria, yet may come with higher interest rates and shorter terms.
  • Direct lenders: Focus specifically on truck financing and may cater to borrowers with poor credit.
  • SBA lenders: Allow for the use of SBA loans for trucks, usually requiring strong credit and possibly a personal guarantee.

How to finance a semitruck

If you’re considering financing a semitruck, follow these steps to get started:

1. Find a truck

Begin by identifying a commercial truck. Once you have a price in mind, assess your budget based on projected income and savings.

2. Plan for a down payment

While some lenders may forgo down payments, offering one could enhance your application if you have less-than-ideal credit and can lower monthly payments.

3. Compare lenders and apply

When evaluating lenders, compare their rates, terms, and eligibility criteria to find a suitable option for your needs. Gather necessary documents like bank statements and the bill of sale once you’ve found a lender.
