Driver of the Month: Brad Coppin

DES MOINES, Iowa — TMC Transportation has honored Brad Coppin as its driver of the month for December 2020. Coppin began his career in the transportation sector by transporting poultry. However, as the poultry industry began to decline, he recognized it was time for a change.

Transitioning to Flatbed Driving

While researching trucks and observing fellow drivers at truck stops, Coppin gained insight into various freight trailer types and the associated lifestyles. He soon decided he wanted to focus on flatbed driving. He explored online options for flatbed transportation companies and joined truck-driver forums to find the best match.

Choosing TMC Transportation

“TMC had one of the best reputations in the industry, with minimal complaints,” he shared. “When I reached out for more information, I learned about their excellent pay program.”

Becoming a Trainer

Coppin became part of TMC’s linehaul division and quickly showed interest in becoming a trainer. “I enjoy meeting new people and experiencing various cultures,” he remarked. “My favorite part of training is engaging with trainees and answering their questions, which adds variety to my routine.”

Gaining Experience as a Trainer

After 12 years with TMC and five years serving as a driver-trainer, Coppin reflects on his experiences. “It’s not just about how you accomplish tasks, but the results that matter. Everyone has their own methods that can still lead to success.” He also emphasizes the importance of patience when training new drivers.

A Unique Training Philosophy

Coppin believes in providing ongoing support even after trainees leave his truck. “I ensure trainees know they can reach out with any questions, and I maintain contact with those I’ve trained,” he said. He credits much of his success to his own trainer, Kent Hall, who has been both a mentor and a friend.

Recognition from TMC Management

Jeff Geist, the training coordinator manager at TMC, acknowledges Coppin’s contributions. “Brad brings valuable experience to the training process and emphasizes safety and success for his trainees, offering support well beyond their time with him.” Each month, TMC selects outstanding driver-trainers based on their safety records, performance of their trainees, the number trained, and the retention rates.
