Trucking Industry in Ohio

According to the Ohio Trucking Association, approximately 100,000 individuals in Ohio earn their livelihoods as truck drivers. Full-time over-the-road drivers have an average annual salary of about $75,000, with skilled drivers boasting six-figure incomes depending on their experience and safety records.

The Challenges and Rewards of Trucking

FST Logistics President Brad Wright emphasizes the demanding nature of trucking, noting the long hours, stress, and time away from loved ones. However, he also affirms that it is a lucrative profession that offers substantial earnings.

The Perspective of a Veteran Driver

Mike Seeger, who has been driving for four decades and runs a daily route for FST Logistics in Grove City, shares insights about life on the road. Before starting any journey, he conducts thorough pre-trip inspections, checking tires, fluids, and lights for issues needing attention.

Enjoying the Journey

Seeger expresses his love for the time he spends driving and the sights he sees, mentioning that while he currently enjoys a daily route home each night, his earlier long-distance trips kept him away from home for extended periods.

The Emotional Toll of Trucking

He acknowledges the difficulties of the job, including the stress and loneliness it can bring, as well as the longing to be with family. Although he’s content with his career, he recognizes the emotional strain of being away from loved ones.

Training the Next Generation

Seeger, with his extensive experience and friendly attitude, often mentors younger drivers at his company. While he hasn’t encountered severe accidents, he understands the job’s risks and stresses the importance of safety in the industry.

Industry Challenges

Despite the high demand for trucking, the industry faces significant challenges, including a four-year recession and competition from companies that cut safety and insurance standards to offer lower shipping rates. Seeger points out that these practices hurt truckers and contribute to the difficult environment for many drivers.

Community and Camaraderie

As Seeger approaches retirement, he reflects on the camaraderie among truckers. He appreciates the bonds formed with fellow drivers, often connecting at truck stops, creating a sense of family within the industry.
