Finding Connection in Isolation
Traveling frequently across the country can sometimes leave one feeling isolated. However, even brief interactions, like phone interviews, can reveal shared experiences and values. Growing up in a severely abusive environment has trained me to be discerning about people’s true character.
Meeting Rodney Timms
Through technology, I had the chance to connect with Rodney Timms, the founder of Western Flyer Express, a sizable trucking company based in Oklahoma City. My interest in sharing his story goes beyond his impressive business accomplishments.
A Shared Background
During a brief phone call within his interview, I felt an immediate impulse to support his cause. Like Rodney, I grew up in an abusive household. As a child, I once attempted to intervene when my father was harming my mother, which led to a violent incident involving my aunt.
Overcoming Childhood Trauma
My father struggled with alcoholism, and the traumatic experiences from my childhood have left me with fragmented memories. In my mid-40s, I was diagnosed with chronic PTSD stemming from my past, and I began the challenging journey of addressing my ongoing struggles with anger and self-medication.
Rodney’s Mission Against Child Abuse
I connected with Rodney through his own story of abuse. He has not only established a successful trucking business but has also dedicated his efforts to launching All Truckers Together Against Child Abuse (ATTACA), aimed at raising awareness and protecting children from abuse.
Statistics and Calls to Action
During his interview, Rodney highlighted alarming statistics on child abuse: reports occur every 10 seconds in the U.S., with millions of children involved each year. ATTACA’s mission is to educate the community about these issues, empowering individuals to recognize and report signs of abuse.
A Challenge to the Trucking Community
Rodney has found a compassionate community within the trucking industry, known for its dedication to worthwhile causes. I challenge everyone in this community to support ATTACA and champion this crucial cause for the protection of children. Together, we can make a difference.
