Investigation and Arrests in Miami-Dade County
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (CBS12) — State officials have apprehended two individuals suspected of distributing fake commercial insurance policies to tow-truck operators in Miami-Dade County, according to the Florida Department of Financial Services’ Criminal Investigation Division.
Details of the Fraudulent Policies
On Tuesday, investigators reported that 24 insurance policies were issued with falsified or erroneous information to comply with state insurance requirements. The vehicle owners believed they were obtaining legitimate coverage.
Identities of the Suspects
One of the suspects, Aliba Lamas Alvarez, is not authorized to sell insurance in Florida. Furthermore, investigators revealed that he is in the country undocumented. Lamas Alvarez was arrested on February 5, 2026, in Miami-Dade County and is facing charges, including operating as an unlicensed insurance agent, engaging in a scheme to defraud, and forgery.
Second Suspect Arrested
The second suspect, Javier Gonzalez Jr., a licensed insurance agent, was also arrested on the same day. He faces allegations of submitting false and fraudulent insurance claims and being part of an organized fraud scheme, as reported in the news release.
Investigation Details
Both arrests are the result of a thorough investigation carried out by the DFS’s Criminal Investigation Division. The case will be prosecuted by the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office.
