SANY Group Advances Autonomous Heavy-Duty Truck Production
SANY Group is on the verge of initiating mass production for its fourth-generation autonomous heavy-duty truck, developed in collaboration with Pony.ai. The first commercial models are anticipated to start operations next year.
Enhancing China’s Autonomous Freight Capabilities
This new vehicle model is expected to elevate China’s status within the autonomous freight sector while facilitating a transition towards more digital, intelligent, and low-carbon operational practices, as stated in a release by SANY on December 8.
Environmental Benefits of the New Truck
The heavy-duty truck is equipped with a battery pack exceeding 400 kWh, which is projected to reduce annual carbon emissions by approximately 60 tons per vehicle.
Cost-Efficiency Through Autonomous Platooning
The innovative “1+4” autonomous platooning configuration from SANY and Pony.ai consists of one manned lead truck followed by four unmanned units. Based on pilot studies, this system could lower per-kilometer freight costs by 29% and increase operating profits by 195%.
Streamlining Autonomous Freight Operations
This approach is designed to enhance the efficiency of autonomous freight scaling for ports and logistics providers, making operations more streamlined.
Strategic Partnership for Future Growth
Beginning their partnership in 2022, SANY combines its expertise in chassis and vehicle manufacturing with Pony.ai’s cutting-edge autonomous driving technology. SANY sees this move toward mass production as a pivotal transition from limited pilot programs to extensive unmanned commercial implementation.
Accelerating the Shift in Logistics
This initiative is expected to accelerate the logistics industry’s evolution towards intelligent and lower-carbon operations.
