Unmatched Purpose of the Rescue Truck
Distinct from other vehicles in the Clayton Fire Department fleet, the rescue truck is referred to as the department’s “toolbox on wheels” by Fire Captain Cory Beard. It is specifically engineered for technical rescue missions, unlike fire engines that bear water and hoses, or ladder trucks equipped with aerial ladders for height access.
Versatile Equipment
According to Beard, the truck is stocked with tools crucial for vehicle extrications, rope rescues, and emergencies in confined spaces. Additionally, it extends its services beyond technical rescues, offering Emergency Medical Services (EMS), carrying forcible entry equipment, ground ladders for search and rescue, and ventilation tools for structure fires.
Primary Unit for Technical Rescues
The truck is the main unit for technical rescues, featuring hydraulic cutters and spreaders for prying open wrecked vehicles, rope systems for high-angle rescues, and equipment for confined space and trench emergencies. This meticulous assembly allows the team to handle intricate emergencies that require specialized skills and knowledge.
Critical Rescue Operations in Johnston County
As Johnston County’s technical rescue provider, the Clayton Fire Department tackles some of the most demanding emergencies, including swiftwater rescues and incidents involving agricultural machinery. Beard highlighted the significance of the rescue truck and team in addressing these challenging situations and serving the community effectively.
Advanced Tools for Modern Rescues
The rescue truck is equipped with advanced tools for incidents such as vehicle accidents, allowing crews to safely remove victims from damaged cars. Beard pointed out the complexities involved with modern vehicles, particularly electric and hybrid models, stressing the importance of specialized equipment for safe rescues.
Daily Inspections and Training
Firefighters conduct daily inspections of the rescue truck to ensure that all tools are accounted for and ready to use. Custom storage compartments enable quick access to necessary equipment during emergencies, which is crucial for efficient response. Ongoing training is fundamental, with every firefighter on the rescue team holding various technical rescue certifications and participating in joint training exercises with nearby departments.
Timely Response and Effective Teamwork
Typically, four firefighters are dispatched with the rescue truck for each call, ensuring safety and efficiency, especially during vehicle accidents that pose risks from passing traffic and unstable wreckage. Upon receiving a dispatch, the crew aims to depart within 90 seconds and work collaboratively with other fire units upon arrival, stabilizing vehicles and carefully extricating trapped individuals. Since its introduction in November 2015, the current rescue truck has significantly enhanced the department’s capabilities, providing a vital service to the Town of Clayton.
