Investigation Ongoing After Tragic Preschool Accident

Authorities have not yet spoken to the driver of a truck that crashed into a preschool, resulting in the death of a beloved kindergarten staff member known for her kindness and generosity.

On Monday, a 68-year-old driver lost control of his water tanker and collided with the playground of the Macedon Ranges Montessori Preschool, located northwest of Melbourne. Eleanor Bryant, a 43-year-old speech pathologist at the preschool, died at the scene, while a three-year-old boy was transported to the Royal Children’s Hospital.

Victorian Police Commissioner Shane Patton stated that the driver is currently under medical observation and will be interviewed once he is deemed fit. He also mentioned that it is too soon to determine if a medical issue caused the incident, emphasizing that all possibilities are being explored.

In a heartfelt tribute, Alex Cullen, presenter on Nine’s Today Show and a childhood friend of Ms. Bryant, described her as someone who “lit up every room” and expressed the community’s sorrow over her untimely death. Cullen recounted her bravery in pushing children out of harm’s way, reflecting her selfless character.

Ms. Bryant, affectionately known as EJ, was a talented speech pathologist from Coonamble, NSW, and leaves behind a husband and two children aged 11 and 9. She has been hailed as a hero for her quick actions during the tragic event.

Following the accident, a boy injured in the incident received treatment for a non-life-threatening arm injury. Detective Senior Sergeant Christian Von Tunk noted that initial findings suggested the truck lost control approximately 120 meters from the preschool, calling it a tragic incident that could have had even more severe consequences.

The local basketball club, where Ms. Bryant served as an equipment and uniform coordinator, expressed their devastation over her passing. In a Facebook post, the Riddells Creek Basketball Club praised her kindness and commitment to the community, highlighting her role as an exceptional mother and wife. McKenzie Water owner Alan McKenzie confirmed that the truck was part of their fleet and mentioned the driver is believed to have experienced a medical episode.

Macedon Ranges council chief executive Bernie O’Sullivan extended heartfelt condolences, emphasizing the priority to support those affected, particularly the community of Riddells Creek.
