Celebrating National Truck Driver Appreciation Week
As National Truck Driver Appreciation Week kicks off, there are numerous facets of professional driving to recognize. Those of us in the trucking industry hope for greater public awareness and appreciation of the long hours, safety expertise, and personal sacrifices involved in this profession.
Health Challenges Faced by Drivers
One significant sacrifice made by truck drivers is often related to health. A sedentary lifestyle combined with poor dietary choices over the years, which is prevalent among long-haul drivers, can impact their well-being. As a result, certain health issues, such as sleep apnea, are more frequently observed in the trucking community.
Educational Resources on Health
To help address these health concerns, Overdrive has created a series of two-minute videos that offer basic information on diagnosing these conditions, as well as tips for prevention and management.
Additional Health Resources
A valuable resource for truck drivers seeking health information is Progressive Insurance’s online community, Trucker Territory. This platform provides in-cab meal recipes, exercises that can be done near the truck, and more. Furthermore, the St. Christopher Truckers Relief Fund is running its “Rigs Without Cigs” campaign, which assists drivers in quitting smoking and using tobacco. In collaboration with Progressive and other organizations, St. Christopher also offers truck drivers vouchers for complimentary flu, shingles, and pneumonia vaccinations.
Daily Video Series
Overdrive’s video series will continue to be released daily throughout Truck Driver Appreciation Week. The videos were crafted by Matt Cole and Deanne Winslett and are produced by Andrew Guinn.
Exploring Key Health Topics
The first video addresses issues surrounding sleep problems, and you can watch it below. Be sure to check out the entire Better Health video series at this link.
