Nearly ten years ago, Justin Romanov escaped from Russia to Canada, seeking refuge after facing police brutality in Moscow for advocating LGBTQ rights. In Canada, he found safety and stability, establishing a life with a partner and purchasing a home just outside Ottawa.

However, Romanov, 26, has recently experienced a troubling side of Canada during a large protest in the nation’s capital. Hundreds of truckers and demonstrators have gathered at Parliament Hill in Ottawa, demanding an end to Covid-19 vaccine mandates, which has left him and many others feeling unsafe.

“I just don’t feel safe to be there,” Romanov, who works as a food delivery driver downtown, expressed. “I do not feel safe in downtown Ottawa right now because I fear that if people discover I’m a refugee and gay, I could be in trouble. Honestly, it disappoints me that this protest continues to spread across Canada.”

The ongoing “Freedom Convoy” protest not only disrupts life in Ottawa but has also had repercussions beyond the Canadian border. Authorities are concerned that similar protests could affect events like the Super Bowl near Los Angeles, as well as lead to demonstrations in Washington, D.C.

Protests inspired by the convoy have emerged in other locations, including New Zealand, Australia, France, and more. Organizers have announced plans for a demonstration in Brussels, Belgium, involving convoys merging from various European countries.

Initially sparked by opposition to vaccine mandates for cross-border truckers, the protest has evolved into a broader confrontation against Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government and national Covid regulations. Though some participants gather peacefully, the atmosphere has become tense, with reports of harassment towards masked individuals and occasional instances of vandalism and the display of offensive symbols that have left Ottawa residents feeling anxious.

As the protests continue, there are growing police efforts to restore order. Ottawa’s Mayor declared a “state of emergency,” citing safety concerns. Despite police actions resulting in numerous ticketing and arrests, the protest’s influence appears to be expanding into international territories, supported by various factions including those aligned with far-right views.
