The initiative, managed by Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, takes place monthly at one of the busiest truck stops in the UK. The sessions offer blood pressure assessments, cholesterol and blood sugar tests, weight monitoring, lifestyle guidance, and referrals—all without requiring an appointment. This format is tailored to accommodate the irregular schedules and rest breaks of drivers.

INFO-BOX: Health Hub for HGV Drivers — Key Information

Category: Information

Location: Truckstop@J24, Huntworth Business Park, M5 Junction 24, North Petherton, Somerset (UK)

Opening Times: Third Thursday of each month, 5:00pm – 8:30pm

Services Offered: Blood pressure checks; blood sugar screening; cholesterol tests; weight and BMI monitoring; lifestyle advice; GP referrals

Cost: Free of charge

Operator: Somerset NHS Foundation Trust

Who Can Use It: All HGV and PSV drivers, including international drivers; no appointment necessary

Typical Visit Duration: 10–15 minutes

Purpose: Aiming to assist drivers who struggle to obtain regular GP care due to demanding hours and erratic schedules

As noted by Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, many drivers utilizing the hub discovered previously unidentified health conditions. Due to long and inconsistent shifts, and the challenge of securing GP appointments, numerous drivers can go for years without standard health monitoring. This concept follows the earlier model of “market health hubs” intended for agricultural communities but has been adapted for the needs of highly mobile workforces like truck drivers.

While primarily aimed at drivers, the initiative has broader implications for the transportation industry. Untreated medical conditions, unmanaged diabetes, and high blood pressure can elevate accident risks, provoke sudden health incidents while driving, and contribute to rising absenteeism and insurance costs for operators. Evidence ties poor driver health to roadside emergencies, near-miss occurrences, and temporary suspensions driven by medical concerns.

UK businesses are legally obligated to address risks associated with fatigue and medical issues that could impair a driver’s ability to safely operate an HGV. This responsibility includes promoting health monitoring, offering guidance on rest periods, and directing drivers to easily accessible healthcare. However, many companies find it challenging to provide effective support due to operational demands and strict timelines.

The Truckstop@J24 health hub presents a practical approach: delivering healthcare services directly at a location frequented by drivers. If replicated throughout the motorway network, similar hubs could aid operators in minimizing unscheduled absences, enhancing compliance with health regulations, and bolstering fleet safety.
