Managers of heavy-duty trucking fleets are well-acquainted with market changes, especially with the complexities introduced by tariffs, which affect both pricing and supply chain reliability. John Hoover, the vice president of national fleet and technical services at Truck-Lite, emphasizes the benefits of being a manufacturer based in the U.S. amidst these challenges.
“More than 80% of our products are designed, engineered, and built in the United States,” Hoover stated. As tariffs could reach over 9%, this capability places Truck-Lite in a strong position when engaging with OEMs, aftermarket clients, and fleet managers. Throughout their 70 years in operation, Truck-Lite has navigated economic downturns, fuel challenges, and supply chain issues, consistently adapting to align with the needs of fleets. Hoover highlighted the significance of flexibility: “Our ability to adapt to customer demands while providing high-quality parts and exceptional service is what carries us through uncertain periods.”
LED Lighting: A Bright Future for Trucks
A notable innovation aiding fleets in managing unpredictability is LED lighting. Hoover, who has observed the progression of LED technology over his 28 years at Truck-Lite, pointed out that LEDs provide significant financial advantages due to their long lifespan and sturdy construction. “LEDs are built to last longer, resulting in better ownership costs for fleets when they evaluate equipment lifecycle,” he clarified.
Hoover anticipates a decline in halogen and incandescent lighting, a trend exacerbated by shortages during the pandemic. LEDs, known for their exceptional brightness and rapid response times—crucial during braking situations—also present substantial safety advantages. The clearer illumination reduces driver fatigue and enhances visibility at night, reinforcing these safety benefits.
Looking forward, Hoover alludes to even more advanced lighting solutions that will fit into the increasingly sophisticated ecosystems of electric and autonomous vehicles. Given that trailer lifespans often exceed those of tractors, the durability and dependability of LED lighting are vital for maintaining fleet uptime, particularly as the use of autonomous trucks expands.
