The Mack Truck experience is unique, perhaps due to its in-seat massager that effectively alleviates tension and stress. This emphasis on driver comfort is evident throughout the Mack Pioneer, from its advanced digital camera mirror system to the innovative Command Steer technology, showcasing that this latest on-highway model is notably distinct.
Our behind-the-wheel experience took place at the Mack Trucks Experience Center in Allentown, Pennsylvania.
From the driver’s seat, the Pioneer boasts enhanced adjustability, including a sliding base, lumbar support, and a gliding suspension, alongside the massage feature. The air-assisted foot pedal facilitates precise steering wheel adjustments, allowing drivers to make small changes while in motion. The steering wheel integrates audio, phone, and cruise controls for quick access.
Visibility, Inside and Out
The visibility package of the Pioneer enhances comfort further. Its one-piece, curved windshield offers an aerodynamic design with excellent visibility over the hood. This setup includes a heated windshield for improved clarity in cold conditions and dual side vents to prevent fog and moisture.
The new digital side mirror system enhances driver awareness with camera-based views that allow for angle adjustments, night vision switching, and distance guidelines. Features such as zoom, trailer tracking, and electronic folding eliminate the need for traditional hood mirrors, creating better sightlines around the vehicle.
The Mack Pioneer Command Center
The upgraded touchscreen interface centralizes controls for HVAC, audio, and navigation, with additional display options for the passenger area. It supports modern connectivity like CarPlay and Android Auto, alongside data logging mounts, 12-volt outlets, and conveniently placed USB ports.
Redesigned Drive Controls and Command Steer
Mack has replaced the traditional mDRIVE keypad with a stalk-mounted drive selector that manages forward, reverse, and neutral settings. This stalk also switches between manual and automatic shifting and offers various driving modes, including Performance and fuel-efficient options. The engine brake now features five settings, including an automatic function for maximum braking.
Integrated tire monitoring displays both pressure and temperature, while the Command Steer system allows drivers to customize steering responses for different routes, enhancing control and reducing fatigue during long travels.
Staying Safe
The Pioneer is equipped with Mack Protect, an advanced driver assistance system that uses radar and cameras for hazard detection, assisting with braking, engine management, and steering corrections. Features such as lane departure warnings and lane change support are included. The cab’s construction with high-strength steel enhances rollover protection, and frontal airbags will be standard on this model.
