Partnership Aims to Connect Job Seekers with High-Demand Work

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — The Economic Development Commission has joined forces with private companies to help individuals seeking employment find opportunities in a growing industry.

Breanna Luna Takes the Wheel

Truck driver Breanna Luna is gearing up for a journey across the Valley. “It’s pretty incredible getting in the truck and feeling so much power,” Luna expressed.

A Path from Welfare to Work

Employed at Lawson Rock and Oil in Fresno, Luna is now a truck driver after successfully completing a training program designed to transition individuals off welfare and into the workforce.

Transportation Challenge Sparks Innovative Training

The initiative was conceived by John Lawson, the owner, and Leann Eager from the Economic Development Commission, stemming from a discussion about the need for truck drivers due to the High-Speed Rail project. Lawson generously provided his land and time to bring this program to life.

Comprehensive Training for Aspiring Drivers

The 240-hour training course is conducted by experienced instructors. “We take them out on the highways to learn gear shifting and perform pre-trip inspections,” shared Glen Wills, a truck driving instructor.

Impressive Outcomes from the Program

Since its launch 2.5 years ago, the program has successfully trained 138 individuals. “Everyone who wants a job can find one. In the welfare-to-work context, an 82% success rate is astounding,” noted LeeAnn Eager, President and CEO of the Fresno County EDC.

Creating Future Opportunities

Driver salaries can start at around $15 per hour and increase from there. The program is free for eligible participants, making it a dream come true for Luna. “It wasn’t that I didn’t want to work; I just didn’t have the chance to do what I wanted,” Luna remarked.

Expanding the Initiative

The New Employment Opportunities (NEO) program covers the first three months of a new employee’s salary and offers additional compensation afterward. The EDC aims to attract more employers to join the effort. “This has been so successful that we’re planning to start a second training location in Southeast Fresno, collaborating with the Fairgrounds,” Eager added.

Interested applicants must demonstrate readiness to work. For more information, individuals can contact Social Services.
