The film “The Ice Road,” starring Liam Neeson as a truck driver navigating perilous ice roads in Winnipeg, earned positive reviews when it debuted on Netflix in June 2021. This film highlights an industry that has long been the focus of the reality TV series “Ice Road Truckers,” which premiered years earlier and has since brought attention to the real-world ice road trucking profession.
Similar to “Deadliest Catch,” which chronicles the dangerous lives of crab fishers in Alaska, “Ice Road Truckers” delves into a risky and frequently overlooked occupation. Audiences become familiar with the series’ main personalities, making their stories just as captivating as the insights into the ice road trucking world.
Lisa Kelly, a prominent figure in the show, first appeared in Season 3 and has since been featured in eight seasons and several spinoffs. Her most recent involvement was during Season 11 in 2017, which remains the series’ latest installment. Despite no episodes being aired since 2017, History Channel has yet to officially announce the show’s cancellation. Recently, Kelly raised the topic of a potential return for the series in an interview discussing her career.
Lisa Kelly states that Ice Road Truckers is presently on an extended hiatus exacerbated by the pandemic
In a video interview with Overdrive, a trucking industry publication, Lisa Kelly spoke about the possibility of “Ice Road Truckers” returning. As their chat concluded, interviewer Max Heine inquired whether Kelly had any final thoughts on topics they hadn’t already explored.
Kelly replied, “The show’s been on hiatus for a while, and I really hope it comes back. There’s been some discussion about it, but I feel like the whole COVID situation has stalled progress.” She added, “Honestly, I’m unsure what will happen next.”
Heine then asked Kelly how the pandemic affected the freight industry in Alaska. She explained that the overall workload significantly dropped, attributing this decline to rising oil and gas prices, which likely contributes to the show’s indefinite delay.
In a 2020 discussion with Deals on Wheels, another “Ice Road Truckers” cast member, Alex Debogorski, noted that while his relationships with co-stars vary, he specifically mentioned staying in touch with Kelly. Thus, although the future of “Ice Road Truckers” remains uncertain, it seems Kelly and Debogorski continue to enjoy a positive relationship professionally.
