Transformation in Preaching
Jay LeRette experiences a significant transformation when he delivers his sermons. A mild-mannered Midwesterner at heart, who enjoys country gospel and has a trained horse that can roll over, he becomes a compelling figure—full of energy and passionate conviction. At 64 years old and dressed in cowboy attire, he commands attention. With an animated voice, he conveys the struggle against evil, punctuating his words with gestures, asking for affirmations from the audience, and embodying a fervent spirit. “God—but God!” he exclaims, emphasizing compassion and hope.
Setting the Scene
On a December evening in 2021, as Christmas approaches, I find myself in a trailer repurposed into LeRette’s chapel, parked permanently at Petro Travel Center, a truck stop in northern Illinois. Surrounded by numerous commercial trucks carrying all sorts of cargo, the chapel has “Transport for Christ” printed on one side and a glowing neon cross on another. At the rear, a passage from John 3:16 is displayed, along with a depiction of hands cradling a truck.
Weathering the Storm
Despite tornado warnings across Illinois, with strong winds shaking the trailer, truckers continuously enter to attend the service. The minimalistic chapel, with around 20 chairs facing the front, features framed Bible verses on the wooden walls. A lectern sits at the front, while LeRette has an office and sleeping area in the back.
Community of Drivers
The drivers present, predominantly older men with signs of fatigue from their long stints on the road, all arrive straight from work. Most appear to be over 50, and some greet each other enthusiastically as they arrive. When LeRette begins the service with hymns and guitar, familiar faces call out to one newcomer, “Rip!” who receives warm hellos and high-fives.
Biblical Engagement
LeRette distributes King James Bibles and directs everyone to Luke 10:25. A humorous exchange ensues as one man confuses the Gospel of Luke with a heavy metal band, sparking laughter among the attendees. LeRette’s ability to engage the weary men with playful banter creates a light-hearted atmosphere.
Reading and Interpretation
A man named John, an older gentleman in a hoodie, is asked to read from the Bible. Although he struggles with pronunciation, the group remains supportive and patient. As LeRette explains the story—a lawyer attempting to ensnare Jesus in a contradiction—he underscores the unwavering nature of Jesus, reinforcing that He is “the living word of God.”
Engaging Moment
LeRette encourages participation from the men, quickly inviting call-and-response interactions. His energetic style of preaching—clapping, stamping, and dancing around—invites them to join in the affirmation of faith. “Jesus carries our load, amen?” he bellows, creating a vibrant connection amid their challenging lives.
