HENDERSON, N.C. (WLS) — A death investigation involving a truck driver from the Chicago area is raising questions and inciting rumors online across the nation.
Javion Magee, a 21-year-old from Aurora, was discovered deceased in a rural location on Wednesday. Authorities reported that Magee, who was Black, was found close to his truck, leaning against a tree with a rope around his neck.
Magee’s family, distressed by the situation, is seeking answers and many are traveling to North Carolina to urge investigators to provide more details regarding the circumstances surrounding his death.
Family spokesperson Candice Matthews expressed, “There are many gaps in this case, lots of questions and insufficient answers.” She added, “This family seeks transparency, accountability, and justice.”
Vance County Sheriff Curtis R. Brame stated that claims of a lack of transparency from the sheriff’s office are unfounded. He emphasized, “The young man was not dangling or swinging from a tree. The rope around his neck wasn’t a noose.”
Sheriff Brame noted that while there were no indications of foul play, he refrained from labeling the death as a suicide. He mentioned Magee had visited a nearby Walmart before his death, where he is believed to have purchased the rope.
The body has been sent to the medical examiner for an autopsy to ascertain the cause of death. Preliminary results did not provide a conclusive explanation, and the family has expressed concerns, suggesting foul play and a perceived lack of transparency in the investigation.
