Honoring Achievements in Trucking During Black History Month
In celebration of Black History Month, Trucking Moves America Forward (TMAF) is highlighting the accomplishments of contemporary truck drivers and their significant contributions to the trucking sector.
Spotlight on Charlton Paul
One of the noted Black History Month Leaders this year is Charlton Paul, a driver for UPS Freight. With over 25 years of experience in the profession, he has dedicated the last 23 years to UPS Freight, amassing an impressive record of over 2.2 million miles without any accidents.
A Lifelong Passion for Trucking
Paul’s interest in trucking sparked at just seven years old during a store visit with his father, where he was captivated by a “beautiful” truck unloading merchandise. This moment ignited his ambition to pursue a career as a professional truck driver.
Significance of His Work
Reflecting on his career, Paul describes it as “the most fantastic job,” emphasizing the honor he feels in contributing to society. He recalls his role in delivering medical supplies during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as educational materials that will shape the future of engineers and leaders, reinforcing the importance of his work.
Family Pride and Recognition
Paul’s family takes great pride in his achievements, which include being honored at the White House by former President Trump and being featured in UPS Magazine. As they learn more about his work, their appreciation for the trucking industry has deepened.
Advocating for Road Safety
Paul stresses the importance of educating the public about the trucking industry. Through the Share the Road program, he has observed awareness among students and adults regarding driving safely around large vehicles, particularly regarding blind spots and stopping distances. He believes that while technology enhances driving, it cannot replace the human element.
Mentoring the Next Generation
Aside from public education, Paul is committed to mentoring colleagues at UPS Freight. During orientations for new hires, he emphasizes a key principle: “Do the right thing, even when no one is watching.” He views his role as not only about his own success but also about uplifting others in the industry.
