Fall 2024 Driver Survey Insights
BRIEF: Conversion Interactive Agency and People.Data.Analytics (PDA) have published their Fall 2024 Driver Survey, which sheds light on the changing priorities and challenges faced by professional truck drivers today, offering essential insights for industry stakeholders.
The survey examines vital topics including driver optimism about the freight market, key factors driving job changes, and preferences for new employment opportunities. It specifically highlights drivers’ job application behaviors, revealing that 85% apply to multiple trucking companies. Of these, 39.9% apply to two or three carriers, while 28.3% seek positions with more than five companies. This trend suggests drivers are keeping their options open, underscoring the necessity for carriers to act quickly and decisively in their recruitment approaches.
Kelley Walkup, president and CEO of Conversion Interactive Agency, emphasized the need for recruitment teams to leverage advanced tools and technology to stand out. “Speed and transparency are more critical than ever in the recruitment process,” he stated.
The survey also noted a substantial increase in job-seeking drivers, with 40.7% currently looking for new employment—this is the highest level reported since tracking began. When asked why they are pursuing new opportunities, predictability in pay was the leading factor, with 81.9% of respondents citing it as a priority. Other key factors included better home time (65.7%) and the desire for consistent miles (49.1%). Additionally, the importance of better benefits has risen by 25% compared to the Spring 2024 survey.
Driver sentiment regarding the future appears promising, with 51.1% believing that 2025 will be more favorable for drivers than 2024. This optimistic outlook presents an opportunity for carriers to highlight improvements in their freight operations and success stories to attract talent.
Retention remains a significant challenge, as only 53.3% of drivers feel valued in their current positions. This highlights the need for carriers to enhance trust and communication within their teams. Tools like PDA’s feedback platforms can help address driver concerns promptly, fostering a culture where drivers feel respected and heard.
The survey further revealed that nearly half of the drivers would consider job offers with enhanced home time, even at the cost of lower pay. This reflects the ongoing challenge drivers face in balancing their professional and personal lives. To effectively communicate the benefits and trade-offs of various positions, recruiters should be equipped with robust strategies.
In conclusion, the survey underscores the necessity for carriers to implement technology and innovative tools for effective recruitment and retention strategies. Addressing the drivers’ preferences for predictable pay, clear communication, and valued feedback is essential for thriving in a competitive landscape.
