Every year, numerous truck drivers encounter avoidable health issues that lead to time off the road and loss of income. The St. Christopher Fund (SCF) is dedicated to addressing this issue.
While it might seem like a cliché, prioritizing health and wellness is always a timely endeavor that can help mitigate future health risks.
The St. Christopher Fund (SCF) offers support to drivers who are unwell or injured and need assistance while unable to work. With the help of generous donors across the country, SCF is able to cover essential short-term living expenses such as rent or mortgage, utilities, vehicle payments, and insurance.
Committed to Health
Many health issues faced by drivers can be prevented, which led to the establishment of SCF’s Driven to be Healthy initiative.
Driven to be Healthy encompasses a variety of health and wellness programs that SCF offers free of charge to Class A over-the-road (OTR) semi-truck drivers. These programs emphasize manageable, incremental steps to promote sustainable health improvements over time.
Rigs Without Cigs
SCF’s longest-standing program, Rigs Without Cigs, provides a comprehensive tobacco cessation initiative. Participants can access numerous treatment options, including Habitrol nicotine patches, guidance from a certified Tobacco Treatment Specialist, online support groups, and rewards for achieving tobacco-free milestones, thanks to our partner, RoadPro.
Vaccination Vouchers
Another enduring program for Class A OTR drivers is the vaccination voucher scheme, which offers vouchers for flu, shingles, pneumonia, and COVID-19 vaccinations. These vouchers can be used at various pharmacies across the country, including Walgreens, Kroger, and Walmart, enabling drivers to receive vaccinations conveniently even when they are away from home.
Preventative Screenings
The Get Preventative Screenings (GPS) program provides crucial cancer screenings, including colorectal and prostate tests, with cervical screenings to come soon. The GPS program facilitates testing while on the road, with rapid result delivery for drivers’ peace of mind.
Diabetes Prevention Program
An additional offering is the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP), a focused 12-week virtual course designed to lower the risk of diabetes. Participants receive health tracking tools, including a glucose meter and fitness tracker. The CDC’s year-long DPP is also available for prediabetic Class A OTR drivers, featuring the HabitNu app for enhanced tracking and trucking-specific workouts.
Comprehensive Care
Understanding the importance of mental and physical health, SCF collaborates with telehealth organizations to provide accessible medical care and counseling services to drivers nationwide.
