Garrett Steenblik: An Inspirational Truck Driver Journey
Garrett Steenblik’s journey as a truck driver is anything but ordinary; it serves as a powerful source of inspiration.
Early in his driving career, Steenblik recognized that his sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy eating habits were endangering his health. He described a life riddled with daily nausea, severe pain, and sleepless nights, compounded by diagnoses of fatty liver disease and ulcers. Additionally, he was struggling with anxiety, depression, and PTSD stemming from a traumatic childhood.
In an attempt to cope, Steenblik initially adopted a routine; unfortunately, it was detrimental. He found solace in consuming three Mountain Dews a day and binge eating, trying to escape the pain he was enduring.
Steenblik’s situation is not unique, as many truck drivers encounter similar health and diet challenges due to the nature of over-the-road trucking. He pointed out that while the industry is vital to our society, truck drivers receive minimal support for their well-being, leading to a public health crisis. With demanding schedules of 10-14 hours daily, truckers often resort to cheap, convenient meals, perpetuating a cycle of poor health.
At a low point in his health crisis, Steenblik decided to make a change. He found determination while feeling defeated and vowed to overcome his past choices impacting his health. This reflective moment fueled his commitment to prioritize his well-being. Support from his wife, Yvonne, who also serves as his driving partner, played a crucial role in his journey. They worked together to integrate workouts during breaks and navigated the challenges of team driving to maintain their health.
Steenblik’s commitment to change brought significant results. Over five years, he lost a total of 200 pounds through a combination of intermittent fasting and a low-carb diet, discovering the intricacies of calorie balance and energy expenditure. The journey not only transformed his body but also significantly alleviated his mental health challenges, proving that physical health is foundational to mental well-being.
Even after achieving his health goals, Steenblik continues to face hurdles in maintaining his weight and wellness. He aspires to encourage fellow truck drivers to take charge of their health and raise awareness about the extensive health challenges within the trucking industry. By sharing his story and offering free health consulting through Facebook groups, Steenblik hopes to inspire other drivers to evaluate their health needs and join the collective effort toward improved well-being in trucking.
