Jamie Sullivan: Aspiring Monster Truck Driver
From a young age, Jamie Sullivan dreamed of becoming a monster truck driver, inspired by her father who built and raced go-karts during her childhood. She started driving early on and recalls, “I grew up racing cars,” Sullivan, now 24, shared with nine.com.au.
Racing Background
“My dad got me into racing when I was nine,” she mentioned. Sullivan transitioned from go-karts to oval track racing and decided to pursue her interest more seriously in 2019 by touring the University of Northwestern Ohio, an institution focused on automotive and high-performance education. “I learned how to work on race cars and monster trucks,” she said.
Breakthrough in Monster Jam
That experience led her to audition for Monster Jam, the world’s premier monster truck tour, which will be in Australia this October. Following a few years working on monster trucks, Sullivan got her chance to drive, which has resulted in three years with Monster Jam.
Family Tradition
Jamie proudly keeps her race car, a massive pink truck called Sparkle Smash, in her parents’ garage. “It’s been a family endeavor; my siblings also raced,” she explained. Her family actively supports her by attending her events, creating a shared sense of accomplishment.
Auditioning Challenges
With aspirations toward Monster Jam since age five, she described her high school experience driving a large pickup truck that made her feel closer to achieving her goal. However, the audition process was intense; while she excelled at driving and stunts, she found the media part challenging. Completing a boot camp with former Monster Jam officials and retired drivers was part of her preparation.
Life Inside the Truck
In her role, Sullivan highlighted the physicality of getting in and out of trucks. Describing competitions, she stated, “Freestyle is quite exhausting because you’re constantly managing the throttle and brake, which is a great workout.” Sullivan has developed several signature moves for her performances, including a horn that releases confetti during her stunts.
Excitement for Upcoming Competitions
Monster Jam will showcase its events in Australia with three competitions: racing, two-wheel skills, and freestyle. Jamie expressed her excitement, saying, “We’ll have ten trucks competing, and I aim to reach the final round.” Fans can anticipate thrilling stunts, including the possibility of backflips, as each truck launches high into the air.
