Florida Officials Uncover $800,000 Insurance Scam Involving Food Trucks

Authorities in Florida have revealed the dismantling of an alleged insurance fraud scheme worth $800,000, where food trucks were utilized to orchestrate fake accidents.

Florida Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater disclosed the findings of a two-year investigation into insurance fraud, resulting in the arrest of 15 individuals linked to a Miami-based group that employed lunch trucks to stage over a dozen accidents, leading to fraudulent claims for property damage and personal injury protection (PIP) totaling more than $800,000.

According to officials, the owners of the food trucks reportedly recruited individuals to impersonate truck owners and fake auto accidents. The fraudulent activities occurred between 2008 and 2010, during which time numerous incidents were staged.

Among those arrested following last week’s operation were Armando Alonso, Yordan Martin Mata, Yanet Soriano, Dunaikis Roche, April Caridad Sequinot, Alberto Paz Hernandez, Yoandris Benitez, Eduardo Alonso Castellanos, Lucia Amigot, Alicia Iris Laurenco Cuesta, Ivan Silva, Robert Jabani Hinklein, Abraham Alliegro, Evelyn Yero Noy, and Jesus Iluminado Guerrero. As of today, Yoandris Benitez has surrendered to the authorities.

Atwater indicated that more arrests are expected as the investigation continues. This initiative is part of a broader effort by the CFO’s Division of Insurance Fraud, in collaboration with the National Insurance Crime Bureau, to combat auto insurance fraud in Florida. In 2011 alone, the division arrested 392 individuals for PIP fraud, marking a 44 percent rise from the previous year, with 166 arrests made so far in 2012.

This recent case coincides with legislative reforms passed by the Florida Legislature aimed at further curbing fraud within the PIP system. “I am confident that the reforms enacted this session will help tackle fraud at its roots while equipping us with more resources to pursue scammers,” Atwater stated.
