Overdrive Radio Podcast Highlights Trucker of the Year Exit Interviews
This week’s Overdrive Radio podcast features the second part of our “exit interviews” series for the Trucker of the Year competition, spotlighting a group of flatbed truckers. The conversation reflects a camaraderie among drivers, particularly around the often laborious topic of tarping.
Scott Smith Shares Insights on Outbound Freight
Scott Smith, an owner-operator from Sapphire Cartage based in Arkansas, shared his recent experiences with long-haul freight to Atlanta. He noted the attractive rates and lightweight loads that provide fuel efficiency, although these loads require tarping.
The Tarping Challenge
“It’s a lot of work—putting on three tarps, securing them with bungees, removing them, and folding them up,” he joked. “Anyone have any sympathy for that?” His comments drew laughter from the group, highlighting a shared burden among flatbedders.
Business Updates Heading into 2026
Listeners will also hear updates from other participants as they gear up for the challenges of 2026. Similar to John Treadway’s story from last week, Morris experienced an unexpected mechanical failure with his 2004 Peterbilt 379, which prompted a costly in-frame repair.
Advice from Experienced Operators
Morris advised new owner-operators to always be prepared for unexpected challenges. “There have been times I wondered if it’s worth it,” he admitted, but ultimately concluded that despite the troubles, “it’s a good life” and still profitable.
