Economic Uncertainty Persists as Inventory Increases in Truck and Construction Equipment Sectors

LINCOLN, Neb., June 4, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Recent market reports from Sandhills Global indicate a month-over-month rise in inventory levels within the U.S. used truck, semi-trailer, and construction equipment markets on platforms such as TruckPaper.com and MachineryTrader.com. While the inventory in heavy-duty trucks and semi-trailers remains stable despite monthly increments, medium-duty truck inventories are on a consistent upward trajectory. However, both asking and auction prices are declining.

“The truck market faces ongoing uncertainty,” states Truck Paper Manager Scott Lubischer. “Dealers are selling trucks out of necessity rather than for upgrades, often lowering prices to enhance sales. They are grappling with reduced port traffic, decreasing freight volumes, and the impact of tariffs.”

In contrast, the inventory levels for used heavy- and medium-duty construction equipment have shown a slight decline despite minor month-over-month increases observed in May. Asking and auction prices for all types of used construction gear have decreased, maintaining stable trends, but continued drops in value could alter these lines downward.

“Used equipment dealers are navigating a mixed market,” remarks Stephanie Olberding, Director of North America Construction. “Seasonal variations in demand have led to minor increases in heavy-duty construction inventory as noted in May’s reports.”

The Sandhills Equipment Value Index (EVI) is crucial for assessing trends in equipment markets, allowing buyers and sellers to maximize returns on purchasing and liquidation. The EVI data encompasses equipment in auction and retail, along with model-year machinery currently in operation. The EVI spread indicates the percentage difference between asking prices and auction values.
