Eaton Corp. Showcases Hybrid Vehicles at NTEA Convention
Eaton Corp. organized a ride-and-drive event featuring seven hybrid vehicles at the 43rd Annual National Truck Equipment Association (NTEA) Convention and Work Truck Show 2007. The event included chassis from notable manufacturers such as International Truck and Engine Corp., Peterbilt, and Freightliner, all equipped with Eaton’s hybrid electric system.
Hybrid System Overview
The hybrid system operates using a parallel-type diesel-electric design that integrates with Eaton’s Fuller UltraShift automated transmission. The setup includes an electric motor/generator positioned between the automated clutch’s output and the transmission’s input. This configuration allows for energy recovery that would typically be wasted during braking, storing it in batteries for later use.
Enhancing Performance and Efficiency
By blending electric torque with engine torque, the stored energy is utilized to boost fuel efficiency and vehicle performance at various speeds, or even to operate using electric power alone. Additionally, the system supplies energy for operations at worksites while the engine is turned off.
Announcement of Commercial Availability
During the event, Eaton revealed that their hybrid systems will be available commercially this year, with production on the assembly lines of most major North American Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs).
Leadership in Hybrid Power Systems
Since establishing its Hybrid Power Systems business unit in March 2000, Eaton has secured multiple patents in the United States. The company has positioned itself as a leader in hybrid power system commercialization, with systems now powering vehicles for major delivery companies like Federal Express and UPS in North America.
Impact on Utility Fleets
In 2006, Eaton’s hybrid electric system was adopted by 24 vehicles across 14 public utility fleets in the U.S. The results have indicated significant improvements in fuel economy and reduction of emissions, according to Eaton’s reports.
Global Hybrid Initiatives
Eaton’s commitment to hybrid technology is not confined to North America; it also includes development programs in Europe and Asia aimed at expanding their global reach.
