Don Talley’s Dedication to Service

MUNCIE, Ind. — Don Talley leads a full life, juggling responsibilities at a food pantry, making weekly deliveries, and caring for three grandchildren. As a retired veteran, his commitment to service—both in the military and at his job with Carter Express—earned him recognition as one of the two 2021 Citizen Drivers by TravelCenters of America.

From Hesitation to Passion

Talley didn’t dive straight into trucking; it was a gradual journey. While stationed overseas with the U.S. Army, he discovered walking wasn’t for him. “So, I drove,” Talley recounted. “I learned to drive a bus, passed the test, and became a master bus driver in Europe.”

Driving for a Cause

His newfound passion became a way to support his fellow soldiers. He shuttled friends to concerts and events like Oktoberfest, and as a drill sergeant, he drove troops using a cattle car. “I always wanted to keep everyone safe,” he said, emphasizing the importance of preventing drunk driving.

A Challenge Accepted

While stationed in Saudi Arabia, he faced a choice: learn to drive a truck or avoid it. Talley, undeterred by challenges, proclaimed, “I told myself I could do it.” After mastering truck driving, he began training others. Although uncertain about his future, his enthusiasm for teaching continued in his over-the-road trucking career in the U.S.

A Mentor in the Trucking Industry

Talley has dedicated 17 of his 18 years as an over-the-road truck driver to training others. Recently, he chose to focus less on full-time training to indulge his passion for driving. “But I still help those in need,” he mentioned, offering his expertise to improve their skills. His motivation to assist stems from a desire to give back to Carter Express, a company he holds in high regard.

Commitment to Community and Family

In addition to his driving career, Talley actively supports his community and family. Every Sunday, he helps his wife, Becky, at their church’s food pantry, preparing meals and making deliveries. Following the loss of their oldest daughter, Lori, they initiated a golf tournament to benefit her high school. “My entire family participated,” he recalled, expressing a sense of unity through their efforts.

Life Beyond the Road

When he’s not driving or volunteering, Talley enjoys spending time with his other daughter and grandchildren, who are involved in wrestling and sports. “I’m really proud of my grandkids,” he said, cherishing their accomplishments as they affectionately call him Papa. Just as he finds joy in family, he finds fulfillment in reaching out to others in need.
