A large group of truckers and their supporters is preparing to gather in Canada’s capital for a protest that has evolved from dissatisfaction over vaccine mandates to demands for the cancellation of all public health measures, and even calls for the federal government’s overthrow.
In anticipation of the Saturday demonstration in Ottawa, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau labeled the protesters as a “small fringe” group with “unacceptable views,” asserting that they do not represent the broader Canadian populace.
This month, Canada began enforcing a requirement for truckers crossing from the United States to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Unvaccinated drivers, who make up less than 15% of Canadian truckers, must undergo a 14-day quarantine. The country has reported 2.93 million COVID cases and 32,600 related fatalities.
The convoy, which departed from Vancouver earlier this week, boasts more than 275,000 supporters on Facebook and nearly 40,000 on Telegram, having raised C$5.5 million (US$4.3 million) through 70,000 donations on GoFundMe.
GoFundMe recently announced that it would freeze the funds pending discussions with organizers on distribution. Jessica Davis, a former intelligence analyst, noted concerns about the “speed and anonymity” of these donations, suggesting many donors might not even be Canadians and could include international contributions.
The convoy underscores the connection between public health initiatives like vaccine mandates and political divisions. One of the protest’s leading groups, Canada Unity, opposes what it deems “unconstitutional” COVID regulations and plans to present a “memorandum of understanding” to lawmakers, claiming it will establish a committee to eliminate the vaccine mandate.
While such fringe ideas have drawn comparisons to the January 6 insurrection in the United States, the convoy has received backing from several Conservative federal politicians, including former leader Andrew Scheer and current deputy leader Candice Bergen, who have called for peaceful demonstrations. Notably, endorsements have also come from figures like Donald Trump Jr. and Elon Musk, further amplifying the movement’s visibility.
