Thieves Target Construction Company in Houston

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Houston police are investigating a burglary at a construction services firm where a group of thieves stole various heavy equipment overnight.

Details of the Break-in

The burglary took place early Thursday at Ameco, a provider of large-scale oil and gas services, located in southeast Houston. Authorities report that the suspects went to great lengths to gain entry, breaching multiple layers of fencing before attempting to steal several large vehicles.

Surveillance Footage Reveals SUV Ramming Fences

According to Dan Rich, the Chief Operating Officer at Ameco, surveillance images show a black SUV crashing into an outer fence. Following this, several individuals entered the property and attempted to drive away with some of the largest trucks available, with mixed results.

Emotional Impact on Employees

“It’s upsetting; it feels violated,” said Rich. “Our livelihood depends on this equipment, and to come here and find it stolen is disheartening.”

Attempts to Steal Large Trucks

Although the thieves tried to steal larger construction vehicles, they faced challenges. One truck got stuck in the fencing, while another broke down after hitting a concrete barricade.

GPS Tracking Leads to Arrest

The thieves managed to take several smaller Kubota vehicles, one of which was later tracked via GPS to a nearby residence. Police detained several individuals at the site and apprehended the driver of the stolen vehicle, although a resident denied any involvement.

Ongoing Investigation and Concerns

Ameco employees dispute the local resident’s account but are focused on recovering the missing equipment. Estimates suggest the damage to the equipment alone is at least $100,000. Rich expresses concerns about a rising trend of thefts targeting construction machinery, likening it to chop shops for vehicles.

Strange Items Stolen

The thieves also attempted to steal unusual items, including a microwave and a bag of chips from the company kitchen, but damaged the vehicle in the process, preventing its departure from the property. Rich indicated that surveillance footage will be submitted to prosecutors, and anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Houston Police Department.
