Recent Accomplishments in Trucking Industry
According to the administration, several achievements have been made, including:
Streamlining Commercial Driver’s Licensing
The Department of Transportation (DOT) has provided states with $57 million in federal funding and technical support, resulting in a more than twofold increase in the issuance of new commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs) in January and February compared to the same months in 2021. The administration reports that over 876,000 CDLs have been issued since this January.
Enhancing Registered Apprenticeships in Trucking
In a bid to bolster retention, over 100 companies, including notable names like Domino’s, Frito-Lay, and UPS, have established Registered Apprenticeship programs within just 90 days. The Labor Department has expedited the program initiation process from several months down to as little as 48 hours, which, according to President Joe Biden, could lead to the addition of more than 10,000 apprentices.
Connecting Veterans with Trucking Careers
The trucking sector has collaborated with veterans service organizations to create the Task Force Movement: Life-Cycle Pathways for Veterans and Military into Trucking. Chaired by former congressman and veteran Patrick Murphy, this initiative aims to enhance the recruitment and retention of veterans and military families in the trucking industry.
Investing in Infrastructure
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg emphasized the importance of improving roads and bridges across the nation, stating, “Infrastructure is our workplace,” as expressed by a trucker. Efforts are being made to collaborate with states to utilize funds for safer truck parking, addressing a critical need for truckers today.
Looking Ahead
Buttigieg noted, “This is just the beginning,” affirming the commitment to continue supporting drivers who contribute every day. The bipartisan infrastructure law offers funding through at least five programs aimed at enhancing truck parking and mandates states to analyze parking requirements within their freight plans.
Highlighting Driver Experiences
During the event, Maria Rodriguez, a first-generation immigrant from Venezuela, shared her journey as a new truck driver apprentice with NFI, highlighting how her career in trucking has brought financial stability and the flexibility necessary to support her family. “My family and home time are everything to me, so I knew NFI would be my top choice,” Rodriguez stated. She praised the apprenticeship opportunity that provided her hands-on training and mentorship, all while earning a wage as she continues her learning.
