Promoting Healthy Living at Liberty Linehaul

Liberty Linehaul shares nutritious recipes and healthy living tips on their Facebook page. With a team of 150, employees actively engage on social media, posting photos with customers and documenting their travels. This platform serves as an excellent way to disseminate safety, health, and wellness information, according to Taylor.

Healthy Eating on the Road

Equipped with refrigerators and microwaves, Liberty’s trucks enable drivers to purchase healthier food options from grocery stores. Additionally, the trucks have auxiliary power units that allow drivers to use their devices without running the vehicles.

Driver Wellness and Awareness

Improved awareness about health has led to drivers opting for healthier meals, notes Corkum. Many restaurants they frequent now offer healthier menu options, indicating a shift towards wellness. The Healthy Trucker website also provides a platform for discussions on health among drivers, making it a social issue as well.

Health Assessments and Regulations

In Canada, truck drivers must undergo a physical fit-for-duty examination to obtain their commercial licenses, with follow-up assessments every three years, although this can vary by age and jurisdiction. Physicians are obligated to report any medical conditions that could disqualify a driver, including various serious health issues, though effective management of these conditions can allow drivers to re-qualify.

Addressing Smoking and Sleep Apnea

Over half of long-haul truck drivers in the U.S. are smokers, a significantly higher rate compared to the general Canadian population. Employers can provide resources to assist with smoking cessation. Furthermore, upcoming regulations from the U.S. Department of Transportation may mandate sleep apnea testing for truck drivers, highlighting the seriousness of this issue, which could greatly affect their health and safety on the road.

Managing Fatigue and Mental Health

Fatigue is a leading cause of accidents in the trucking industry, necessitating comprehensive fatigue management programs for carriers. Additionally, the mental health of truckers is a concern, as issues like loneliness and anxiety are prevalent. Liberty offers support by employing a part-time professional counsellor who understands the unique stressors drivers face.

Commitment to Employee Health

Liberty Linehaul recognizes the importance of employee health not just for their well-being, but also for organizational success. The company believes that a healthier workforce leads to enhanced productivity and reduced costs from injuries and absenteeism. They foster a culture of care, ensuring that drivers are supported both on the road and at home.
