AM Best Ratings Unchanged for Dakota Group

AM Best has confirmed that Dakota Truck Underwriters (DTU) and First Dakota Indemnity Company (FDI), collectively known as the Dakota Group and located in Sioux Falls, SD, retain their Financial Strength Rating of A (Excellent) and Long-Term Issuer Credit Rating of “a” (Excellent). This is in light of the recent announcement regarding their acquisition by Maine Employers’ Mutual Insurance Company (MEMIC) based in Portland, ME. The deal encompasses the acquisition of Risk Administration Services, Inc. (RAS) and its four affiliated insurance service companies. RAS acts as attorney-in-fact to DTU, a reciprocal insurer that will continue to be owned by its policyholders and will maintain a minority stake in FDI.

Impact of the Acquisition

The acquisition will position the MEMIC Group as the third-largest multistate specialty workers’ compensation insurance carrier in the U.S. By combining MEMIC’s strong East Coast presence with the Dakota Group’s operations in the Midwest, the transaction is expected to enhance both organizations’ capabilities. The Dakota Group is noted for its pricing flexibility, impressive underwriting performance, and greater diversification of premiums, contributing to an improved combined ratio on a consolidated basis.

Diversification of Earnings

In addition to the insurance capabilities, the transaction also includes non-risk-bearing entities. This will help diversify the overall earnings of the MEMIC Group by generating additional fee-based revenue, which is a strategic move to bolster financial stability.

Expected Closure Date

The completion of this acquisition is projected for January 2026, pending the necessary regulatory approvals. This transaction is poised to bring significant changes to both organizations, aiming to enhance service capabilities and market reach.

Credit Ratings Information

This announcement is linked to the Credit Ratings that can be found on AM Best’s official website. For further details regarding the ratings, including the specific offices responsible for the ratings mentioned, please visit AM Best’s Recent Rating Activity webpage. Additionally, information concerning the usage and limitations of Credit Rating opinions can be accessed in the Guide to Best’s Credit Ratings.
