AM Best’s Ratings Remain Steady for Dakota Group

AM Best has announced that the Financial Strength Rating of A (Excellent) and the Long-Term Issuer Credit Rating of “a” (Excellent) for Dakota Truck Underwriters (DTU) and First Dakota Indemnity Company (FDI), both based in Sioux Falls, SD and referred to as the Dakota Group, are unchanged. This announcement follows the recent news of the acquisition by Maine Employers’ Mutual Insurance Company (MEMIC) from Portland, ME. The deal includes the acquisition of Risk Administration Services, Inc. (RAS) along with its four associated insurance service companies. RAS acts as the attorney-in-fact for DTU, a reciprocal insurer that will continue to be owned by its subscribers and will maintain a minority stake in FDI.

MEMIC Group’s Expansion

The acquisition enables the MEMIC Group to become the third-largest multistate specialty workers’ compensation insurance provider in the United States. This move combines MEMIC’s strong East Coast presence with the Dakota Group’s established Midwest operations. The Dakota Group is known for its pricing flexibility, robust underwriting performance, and enhanced geographic premium diversification, which are expected to advance an improved combined ratio on a consolidated scale.

Diversification of Earnings

The transaction also encompasses non-risk-bearing entities, contributing to overall earnings diversification through the generation of fee-based revenue. The deal is projected to close in January 2026, pending regulatory approval.
