In Summary

More than 2,000 truck drivers traveling the congested Nairobi–Mombasa highway are expected to benefit from a free eye screening initiative currently in progress. The campaign, titled “Healthy Eyes, Safer Roads,” includes eyesight tests, the provision of corrective eyewear such as glasses, and educational resources on vision care and wellness.

According to the 2023 economic survey, road safety is a critical issue in Kenya, with 4,690 fatalities reported in 2022 due to driver health concerns. Alarmingly, 10.7% of drivers who underwent screening were deemed unfit to drive because of vision impairments.

This ongoing campaign, which began on October 7 and will run until October 11, 2025, is organized by Bamburi Cement as part of its Corporate Social Investment initiative in collaboration with Superior Homes Kenya.

Under the motto “Healthy Eyes, Safer Roads,” truck drivers are receiving vision tests, corrective eyewear, and insights into vision health and wellbeing. By tackling vision-related health issues, the initiative seeks to enhance driver health and mitigate accidents caused by poor eyesight.

During the launch, Faith Wambui, CSR Coordinator at Superior Homes, mentioned that the Supa Stop was designed as a secure and modern facility for drivers, emphasizing that the campaign aligns with its mission to enhance driver wellbeing.

“By providing complimentary eye screenings and corrective care, we are supporting not only the transport community but also contributing to safer roads for all users. Healthy drivers are essential for road safety, and good eyesight plays a vital role in this. This initiative aims to bring attention to this often-neglected aspect of road safety while affirming our dedication to significant community impact,” Wambui stated.

The “Healthy Eyes, Safer Roads” campaign represents a pivotal collaboration between the private sector, governmental agencies, and the transport industry, reinforcing Superior Homes Kenya’s commitment to promoting sustainable community benefits.
