Tackling Youth Unemployment in South Africa

With more than half of South Africa’s youth currently unemployed, Isuzu is setting a new standard in the automotive sector.

Pioneering Training for Drivers

Isuzu Motors South Africa is the first original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to invest in professional training for commercial drivers, aiming specifically to create career opportunities for young people and women in South Africa.

Changing Driver Demographics

The traditional perception of truck drivers as solely rugged men is evolving, with more women, including mothers, and young men taking on driving roles in commercial vehicles throughout the country.

Insights from Industry Experts

Nicci Scott, founder of the Commercial Transport Academy (CTA), noted that the driver demographic is shifting positively, thanks to investments from OEMs like Isuzu, which have opened up more chances for a varied group of commercial drivers.

Progressive Learnership Programs

Isuzu pioneered the inclusion of female truck drivers through its learnership program introduced in 2016. In 2018, the program included both men and women, with all ten participants successfully completing their training.

Real-life Experiences from Graduates

Young graduates from the program, including 22-year-old Samkelo Hadebe, have described their experiences as transformative. Hadebe highlighted the demanding nature of driving commercial vehicles and expressed pride in working alongside female graduates, countering stereotypes.

Employment Opportunities Ahead

The learnership, accredited at NQF Level 3, delivers comprehensive training covering vehicle operation and health and safety. Anyone interested in the newly trained drivers can contact Nicci Scott for opportunities.
