Addressing Mental Health and Wellness in Trucking

On the August 25 episode of What the Truck?!?, Monica Rinaldi, Product Manager of Medical Innovations and Strategy at Travelers Insurance, spoke with FreightWaves’ Thomas Wasson about the importance of mental health and wellness in the trucking industry, along with strategies for improving support for drivers.

Truck driving presents numerous health challenges. Rinaldi emphasized that trucking companies and related organizations can implement various measures to bolster drivers’ overall wellbeing.

The demanding nature of the job often negatively impacts mental health, attributed to extended hours, overnight shifts, sleep disturbances, and ongoing stress. Rinaldi noted, “In addition to isolation, strict delivery schedules, and the absence of routine, these factors can severely affect health.”

Long-haul drivers face significant physical and mental burdens that can lead to deterioration over time. Even if drivers manage their physical health, Rinaldi highlighted social isolation as a key concern, stating, “Missing family celebrations and community ties can strain mental health, and while technology offers a means for connection, it cannot replace face-to-face interactions.”

Rinaldi pointed out that access to mental health care is a major issue for many truck drivers, especially independent ones. Even full-time drivers can struggle to find providers when they can return to home base. Furthermore, regulatory constraints across state lines make accessing virtual mental health services more difficult.

The physical demands of trucking often exacerbate mental health issues. Rinaldi explained that a sedentary lifestyle can lead to various health problems such as obesity and high blood pressure, which in turn affect mental well-being. “Everything is interconnected,” said Rinaldi. “The high-stakes nature of the job further complicates stress levels and overall exhaustion.”

To improve driver wellness, Rinaldi advocates for a comprehensive approach that incorporates mental health into overall safety strategies within the trucking industry. By implementing proactive programs and training for fleet managers to identify mental health warning signs, companies can foster better working environments and enhance driver retention. Considering the stigma surrounding mental health, it’s vital to create open dialogues within the industry to encourage drivers to seek necessary support.

For more insights and resources on mental health initiatives, refer to the Travelers Institute white paper on Investing in Mental Well-Being, which provides valuable information for drivers and companies alike. By prioritizing mental wellness, the trucking industry can ensure that driver health becomes a fundamental aspect of operational success.
