Call for Enhanced Support for Truckers

A recent study by Geotab, a fleet management platform, emphasizes the need for the industry to bolster support for truck drivers as concerns about their wellbeing and road safety escalate.

Impact of Stress on Performance

The report titled “The Ripple Effects of Driver Stress on Road Safety and the Bottom Line,” reveals that 68% of drivers feel that work-related stress adversely affects their performance, with 78% attributing road dangers to stress and mental health issues.

Financial Consequences of Driver Stress

Geotab’s Vice President of Product Management, Sabina Martin, stated that this stress not only incurs significant financial costs—such as increased insurance premiums and legal liabilities—but also leads to decreased efficiency and heightens risks for all road users.

Driver Turnover and Its Costs

Another considerable expense in the sector is driver turnover, which can range from $10,000 to $20,000 per replacement. A 2024 National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine study highlighted how high turnover rates lead to additional recruiting and training costs, as well as lower productivity and higher crash rates.

Factors Contributing to Driver Stress

Driver stress is influenced by various factors, including lifestyle choices, lack of social interaction, challenges in maintaining a healthy diet, traffic congestion, and dissatisfaction with pay. The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) ranked driver compensation as the fifth most critical industry issue in 2024, corroborating findings from CCJ’s 2024 survey that indicated pay is a foremost stressor.

Challenges on the Road

Drivers also identified traffic congestion as a stress factor. One driver noted how increased traffic density and erratic driving behavior complicate their job, particularly in busier areas. Geotab’s findings echoed these concerns, with 60% of drivers indicating that traffic and road construction hinder their ability to complete tasks.

Investing in Driver Wellbeing

The report advocates for investment in comprehensive support systems for drivers, highlighting a direct connection between driver wellbeing and the transportation industry’s performance. As carriers aim to enhance wellness and personal development programs in 2025, initiatives aimed at improving eating habits and exercise routines are set to be prioritized. Geotab’s recommendations include adopting telematics for better driver behavior understanding and incorporating technology for real-time support and training.
