Support for Stranded Truck Drivers in Samba

Samba, Sep 16: On Tuesday, the Samba district administration extended assistance to over 200 truck drivers and conductors who were stranded on the Jammu-Pathankot National Highway due to severe weather and flooding, offering crucial healthcare services.

Many truck drivers have been stuck for several days because of instability on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway in the Thard and Bali nallah regions of Udhampur district, which had only just reopened after two weeks.

Inauguration of Free Medical Camp

Samba Deputy Commissioner Ayushi Sudan launched a complimentary medical camp in the Tapyal Morh area of Ghagwal sub-division aimed at meeting the immediate health needs of transportation workers affected by the situation.

“Our main focus is on ensuring the safety and well-being of those who facilitate the movement of goods and essential services. This camp is designed to make sure that no one suffers due to circumstances they cannot control,” she stated.

Proactive Humanitarian Approach

This initiative showcases the Samba district administration’s proactive strategy to mitigate the humanitarian effects of natural disasters on key service providers vital to regional commerce and supply chains.

The outreach was organized in collaboration with the Samba health department, with assistance from Ghagwal sub-divisional magistrate K S Bali, who helped coordinate with the stranded truck drivers.

Comprehensive Medical Services

A specialized medical team from Ghagwal Area Hospital conducted thorough medical examinations, distributed free medications, and provided screenings for non-communicable diseases, according to Bali.

“The extended exposure to harsh weather conditions and the uncertainty on the highways puts drivers at risk for various health issues. Our camp offers prompt medical attention and preventative care,” stated Samba Block Medical Officer Dr. Richa Arora.

Positive Response from Stranded Truckers

The stranded truck drivers expressed gratitude for the swift action taken by the administration. “We have been stuck here for two days. The medical camp is a significant relief, showing that the administration cares for us,” said one driver, who preferred to remain unnamed.

This camp is indicative of the administration’s proactive stance on humanitarian efforts amid natural disasters, underscoring the government’s commitment to the welfare of essential service providers during emergencies.
