Judah Friedlander: The Comedic Voice Behind Frank on “30 Rock”
Best recognized for portraying the witty writer Frank on “30 Rock,” Judah Friedlander is also a talented stand-up comedian and the creative mind behind a line of trucker hats. In an interview, he shared insights about his humorous journey, D-list celebrity encounters, and the benefits of creating his own wardrobe.
Character Insights
DARRELL HARTMAN: Recently, it was revealed that Frank is quite the flirt at the office. Is that reflective of your real life?
JUDAH FRIEDLANDER: I got into the spirit of the role, but in reality, it’s probably best to avoid romantic entanglements at work.
Memorable Episodes
DH: You had an office romance with Jenna (Jane Krakowski). How does that episode compare to your favorites?
JF: Though I don’t have a clear favorite, that one was enjoyable. Jane is fantastic to work with, and Steve Buscemi directed that episode, which was a thrill. I also loved participating in an episode where my character assisted Tracy (Tracy Morgan) in creating a video game tribute to Amadeus and another where I humorously portrayed a bisexual storyline with Liz (Tina Fey).
Wardrobe Choices
DH: How much of Frank’s clothing is from your personal collection?
JF: Almost everything! The pants, shoes, and even the trucker hats are my creations. While I enjoy changing my look for films, on a long-running show, I prefer to stick closer to my usual style. Frank and I share a similar appearance yet have distinct differences.
Award Season Experiences
DH: How does it feel to be part of a show that consistently wins Emmys?
JF: It’s fantastic! Attending award shows has given me the opportunity to meet several interesting celebrities, from Sean Penn to James Spader.
Stand-Up Career
DH: You’ve been a stand-up comedian for quite some time. How long exactly?
JF: I’ve been doing stand-up for 20 years and started acting professionally about 12 years ago. My shows are more irreverent than what you’d see on TV, focusing on crowd interaction and humor.
Balancing Acts
DH: How do you manage your time between “30 Rock” and your stand-up shows?
JF: Stand-up is my foundation. I perform regularly in New York, often multiple shows a night. Depending on my filming schedule for “30 Rock,” I adjust my stand-up gigs accordingly.
Creative Input and TV Preferences
DH: Do you contribute to writing on “30 Rock”?
JF: If I have a suitable line or idea, I’ll suggest it to the writers. But they produce such great content that it’s usually best not to interfere. As for what I wish to see more of on TV, I’d love to see independent wrestling, classic made-for-TV movies, and other niche shows.
