A Frustrated College Student’s Encounter with Exhaust Pollution

A college student expressed their frustration by sharing a video on Reddit, showcasing a driver releasing a significant amount of exhaust smoke.

The footage, posted to a subreddit that opposes car pollution, features a large pickup truck belching a brownish exhaust cloud, impacting both the road and nearby pedestrians. The student mentioned that they have already reported this driver to their local smogspotter.

“I also plan to reach out to local authorities regarding possible illegal exhaust modifications to see if this violates the Clean Air Act (1963),” they noted.

The Issue of Rolling Coal

The practice known as “rolling coal” is often employed by diesel truck drivers as a form of intimidation. According to Psychology Today, it involves a diesel vehicle releasing a dense stream of black smoke onto unsuspecting cyclists, pedestrians, or other motorists.

Beyond its environmental harm, rolling coal is illegal as it contravenes local laws and environmental regulations. To produce this excessive pollution, vehicle owners modify their trucks with devices that disable pollution controls. The Sierra Club explains that such modifications can lead to emissions that are 40 to 100 times greater than those of standard vehicles.

Targeting Environmentalists

This aggressive tactic often targets those perceived as environmental advocates, including drivers of electric vehicles. In one incident, a driver of a Cybertruck had a rock hurled at them during a confrontation with someone rolling coal.

Community Reactions

The student’s post ignited strong feelings among other Reddit users, who shared their outrage. One commenter remarked, “These individuals are so angered by others trying to improve the world that they intentionally act to worsen it.”

Another user recounted their experience, saying, “I wish I had noted the license plate of the person who rolled coal on me; I followed all the rules, and they chose to roll coal instead of passing me in another lane.”

A different commenter added, “I’ve encountered pickup trucks doing this to me while driving my Prius.”
