A Model for Safety: Terry Smith’s Driving Philosophy

Terry Smith, hailing from Miramichi, New Brunswick, attributes his impressive record of 4.75 million accident-free miles over 42 years to five key safety rules. His adherence to the fifth rule, which emphasizes not overextending oneself, played a significant role in him being named the 2013 Owner-Operator of the Year, a prestigious recognition within the industry.

Honors and Achievements

This accolade highlights not only his remarkable safety achievements but also his active participation in trucking advocacy at various levels. Smith has been with SLH Transport in Kingston, Ontario, for the last four years. He received his award during the Truckload Carriers Association’s annual meeting in Dallas, winning a 2013 Ram 2500, courtesy of Chevron Delo and Cummins, along with a year’s supply of Delo oil.

Commendations from Peers

“Terry is a pleasure to work with,” says Bill Oakley, operations manager at SLH. “His professionalism and relaxed demeanor contribute to safe and efficient operations. He’s also a mentor in our owner-operator community, sharing valuable insights during driver council meetings.”

Prioritizing Health and Well-being

In the wake of his award, Smith shared insights on his approach to safe driving, especially the importance of not overcommitting. “At 57, my wife and I decided to prioritize our health over chasing money,” he reflects. They reassessed their financial situation and opted for a more balanced lifestyle, minimizing pressure commonly associated with truck driving.

Practical Driving Habits

Despite driving approximately 135,000 miles annually, Smith maintains a steady pace to ensure adequate rest. He starts his day at 7 AM and drives 600 miles, wrapping up by 7 PM to enjoy a balanced evening routine. He emphasizes the importance of health, noting that a driver’s life expectancy is typically 61 years, often due to factors such as poor diet and lack of exercise.

Wise Financial Management

Smith stresses the importance of cash flow management for owner-operators. “Set a salary for yourself and resist the temptation to spend all your earnings,” he advises. This discipline helps avoid financial stress, allowing drivers to make informed choices rather than rushing to cover unexpected expenses.

Community Engagement and Personal Interests

On top of managing his work and finances, Smith is deeply invested in his community. He and his wife, Roxanne, are involved with initiatives like Wreaths Across Canada, building on the successful American counterpart. Terry also organized a significant convoy event to support a friend in need, illustrating his commitment to the trucking community. In their downtime, they enjoy travel, friendships, and shared interests, enhancing their personal and professional bonds.
