Exploring the World of Long-Haul Driving Sims

The world of gaming is full of niches that often go unnoticed, and one such area is the long-haul driving simulation genre. This genre caters to those who enjoy a leisurely gaming experience but also attracts dedicated enthusiasts who create their own setups, complete with luxury steering wheels and replica seats.

One of the latest offerings in this niche is Alaskan Road Truckers. While the genre might be unfamiliar to some, our curiosity piqued when we had the opportunity to speak with Michal Puczynski, the game’s creator. We wanted to understand why this genre, particularly its appeal to simulation fans, especially in Germany, captivates so many players.

Game Overview by Michal Puczynski

“Hi, I’m Michal Puczynski, the CEO of Road Studio. I ensure that my team has everything necessary to realize our vision, and I make pivotal decisions when we encounter challenges,” he shared. According to him, Alaskan Road Truckers is primarily a trucking game but rich with elements typical of a comprehensive trucking experience. Players embody truckers, engaging in activities like shopping, preparing for trips, and managing basic needs as they take jobs across Alaska’s expansive landscapes.

The Appeal of Long-Haul Simulations

Puczynski elaborated on the genre’s appeal, highlighting two main aspects: the allure of driving massive trucks and the captivating Alaskan environment. “Alaska is the largest U.S. state, yet home to fewer than a million people, which means vast wild areas,” he noted, emphasizing the cozy charm of its towns and the sense of adventure inherent in a trucker’s daily life.

Creating the Game World

When asked about the painstaking process of mapping an entire U.S. state for the game, Puczynski lamented that the team didn’t get a chance to visit Alaska but instead relied on extensive mapping and hours on Google Street View. They created a condensed yet authentic representation of central Alaska, including major towns and unique locations, such as a town called North Pole adorned with Christmas decorations.

Realism in Truck Simulation

While the game’s realism shines through in logistics like shopping and truck upkeep, the team chose not to simulate every aspect of trucking. For instance, they decided against including toilet breaks, noting it crossed a line they didn’t want to approach. “We aim to expand the trucking experience while maintaining a focus on the core gameplay,” Puczynski explained, hinting at future possibilities.

Community Engagement and Future Plans

Puczynski acknowledged the significant role of their Discord community throughout development, explaining that many initial ideas and mechanics stemmed from community feedback. Looking ahead, the team has ambitious plans to expand the game, integrating new content that reflects a broader life experience in Alaska, beyond just trucking.

In closing, Puczynski expressed enthusiasm for the game’s potential. “We paused our other project to focus on Alaskan, and we’re eager to explore new experiences for players,” he concluded. Alaskan Road Truckers is set to launch in 2023 for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC, encouraging all to stay tuned for more updates and new adventures in the world of trucking.
